French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist candidate François Hollande will face off in the second round of France's presidential election after edging out the far right's Marine Le Pen in Sunday's first round of voting.

Just as it does with other nations of the world who are on the verge of electing a leader of which it doesn't approve, the Conservative USA had better rush troops over to France ASAP to enforce democracy by ensuring Sarkozy remains President.
Communism has been around since Marx wrote "Das Capital" in 1848 and has been shown to be a failure over time. China, Russia and the others may call themselves communists but they are all adopting capitalism and it is driving their economies. China is closing in on the US as the number one economic power in the world. Socalism has been around as a philosophy for longer than communism and most of Western Europe adopted it as an economic policy after WWII. It does not work. It has noble ideals but you cannot sustain spending more than you take in forever. It astonishes me that it has "lasted" this long before reforms were instituted. France cannot afford a 75% tax on the wealthy. It cannot afford retirement at age 60. Doubling down on polices that have not been shown to work is insane. "La dolce vita" is over, at least for now and not acknowledging it will lead to more pain in the future than they are feeling now.
The Press are predicting a Socialist win despite the results of the First Round, because, as in the United States, the Media is rooting for the Socialist. No objectivism to see here, move along!
I remember in 2007, the world media had practically coronated Royal. Don't count your chickens before they hatch, socialists. You gotta love this "poll" that only 35% of Pen's supporters will vote for Sarkozy. They may not like him, but they are clearly energized, and are hardly likely to stay home and watch a weak socialist ascend to the presidency. Sarkozy is far from out of this.

So the French want Socialism. I'm happy for them. The Socialists will punish the Evil Rich and the Dasterdly Bankers. Everything will continue to be FREE. Happy days are here again.
My dear friends in France, As you know we had elected a socialist president here in America. I can tell you all that this was a bad idea. Though the comments and promises all sounded good in 2008, the fact of the matter is it still comes down to the economics that if you work hard, you will benefit with a better lifestyle. America has increased the amount of it's citizens on food stamps by 30% under the socialist. Unemployment is down, our national debt is out of control. It is just a bad idea. So to all of our French friends, please remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Though Sarkozy has issues, the socialist will break your country.

Looks like a close one! I'll be interested to see the result in 2 weeks' time.
I'm a keen election observer, and I'd love to know how the French political/election system works. I know that there's a run-off in presidential elections if no candidate wins a majority, and ditto for national assembly elections. But does the president have power over the prime minister and government in terms of how it's formed? What happens if the French people elect a president of one political colour and a prime minister of another, a la the cohabitation period of Chirac and Jospin?
Merci from Down Under!
Supporters of Le Pen should stay out of the fight between Sarkozy and Hollande and focus on the parliamentary elections in June. Neither are going to address the Islamic situation and both are committed EUists.
France owes her freedom to the US and snubs us at every turn.....who cares what happens in their government, they, like the US, will get the government they DESERVE.

France is in full retreat...again. France is the laughing stock of the world and I can't wait till this weak race is speaking Arabic. Franswa Frenchie!
Just when we thought the French were approaching normal, with the conservative (even if, er, somewhat, shall we say, "flamboyant" Sarkozy), just because heaven-on-earth hasn't befallen them, surely they would not turn arounda and elect another socialist. Say it ain't so, Pierre, say it ain't so!
And if Le Pen got 18% with the greenie and other fringe candidates only picking up crumbs, how is it that the socialist is now favored?
Take a deep breath, France. Doesn't Obama's joke of a presidency convince you that there is no pie in the sky? A government, be it yours or ours in the U.S. or in Greece or wherever, cannot survive taking wealth from those who earn it to dole out benefits to others. It is a false promise based on false economic dogma. Don't fall for it--again.
how can anyone say the left will win this thing...the 'right' got 57% of the vote...most of those who want Pen to win (she won't) will vote for Sarkozy...the French ppl see that their country is being taken over by the immigrants and are concerned
by Californian (not verified) - 23/04/2012 - 04:53
Why would Sarkozy not pick up the other right-wing parties' votes and Hollande the left in the run-off, giving Sarkozy 25.5 + Le Pen's 18.5 + Dupont-Aignan's 1.8 + 1/2 of Bayrou's centrists (4.4) for a total of 50.2%? Sounds like a win to me!
This is pure insanity that the French, whose economic and social problems come from socialism would attempt to apply more socialism to solve them. Socialist will compound the debt problems of the Euro and the whole mess will tank. Way to go frogs.
It seems odd that a country that gave the world laissez-faire capitalism and the concept of a libertarian press, is now moving back towards worshipping the state. The answer to a faltering economy certainly isn't handing it over to socialists, since those policies infected the free market and simply adding more centralized control, will only worsen the economy. A free market has many imperfections, but a socialized market actually is an imperfection.
When I add up the totals, the center and right-wing parties won a majority of the vote.
Which would lead me to believe that Sarkozy will wind Round 2. But of course, the French media, like our American one, has spun the story to favor the left. They have all proclaimed the Marxist Hollande as the next President.
A move back towards Socialism at this point, ignoring the need to make cuts and balance budgets, and relying on wealth transferrences and higher taxes will end badly. France will go down the hole with Spain and Greece...
The far right candidate got far more votes than the far left. Provided that Sarkozy gets those rightists, then he will have almost 45%. That is not that bad. If you add Hollande's with the far leftist, then you get about 40%. The second round will be interesting.

Sure get the socialist back in power. Crank up the printing presses and tax and spend. That will help. NOT.You will end up like Greece sooner or later.
Sarkozy clearly lost his Jewish voters when he and Commie-leon Maobama made their opinions of Israel and Netanyahu public. By the way, Maobama is next to get sent back to where he really was born for his arrogant, condescending and radical ideology!

France must undergo a shock treatment, before its citizens fully understand they cannot enjoy a modern standard of living by just talking without working. So it is wonderful to see they are about to elect a Socialist government. This will lead inevitably to
20%+ mass unemployment, an economic crisis, and social disorder, which will look very much like Greece today, perhaps even worse. Only then will the French comprehend in their gut the consequence of Socialism. So the more decisive Hollande's win, the better, because he would then do all he wants to do-- and bankrupt France most decisively. Then in 5 years the idiocy of the left will be clear. But, like a drug addict that must nearly die before he kicks the habit, there must be a crisis. It is about to enfold.

So the French are angry about their economy, and the way to fix it is to vote in a socialist. What a bunch of morons. And our liberals here are falling all over themselves to try to get us to emulate these buffoons. More pain is on the way, France, much much more, I guaranteed it.

I remember well how the French meddled in the USA 2004 Presidential Election. They were working very very hard behind the scenes for John Kerry to win. Could you imaging a Kerry Presidency...good God!
The French deserved for decades to get their just comeuppance. NOW THEY WILL....LET THEM EAT CAKE!
Sarkozy ran on a platform of reforming the enterprise strangling state and bringing capitalist entrepreneurial job-creating energy back into France but actually just grew more state, more state and more state. Hollande can be expected from his promises to be even more statist, to crush the entreprenurial class more, to produce more stagnation and unemployment for our generation. I have little hope that Sarkozy will live up to his promises, make France more capitalist and dynamic and give my generation a future - he will just be more of the same. Hollande will worsen the situation and produce not just stagnation but decline and eventual disaster. But perhaps it will take a disaster to wake the people of France up to the need to change. I will vote for Hollande as I would rather have a certainty of disaster with the potential that the disaster will force us to turn the situation around than to continue with the Sarkozy stagnation. The irony in the whole situation is that while Sarkozy failed in his promises to make the French economy more dynamic like that of America, America has found her own socialist in Obama to produce a French style stagnation. It is obvious that both France and America need to become more competitive and more capitalist to embrace the future but both are going the other way.

As an American citizen who has watched almost all of his rights terminated under the false pretense of "protection" against "terrorists", I can say with some certainty that Sarkozy will not go quietly.
Every single citizen of France must look out for a catastrophic event that is blamed on some patsy. False Flag attacks (government sponsored attacks against it's own citizens), is becoming a convenient tool for these filthy, crooked, and corrupt politicians to retain their power when it is evident that they are going to be unseated.
Don't think for a second that this slime ball won't hesitate to blow up a building and then yank all the security tapes and then blame it on some guy in a cave half way around the world.
