A French appeals court approved Tuesday the construction of a large mosque in the city of Marseille, home to an estimated 250,000 Muslims. The mosque, seen as a symbol of Islam's growing presence in France, has attracted national controversy.

If they don't want to become Catholic, and embrace European culture and values, Then they should not be allowed in. Those that are there should be asked to leave. Just ask King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. They had common sense.
let there be peace in the land of france among it's citizens
Just look at Kosovo...totally corrupt and created to divide Europe.Do we really want that to happen to France? The historic crimes of the French ruling class should not be laid at the feet of the French population. The assault on Libya shows the same mentality that created the French empire, except that today its more sophisticated in its duplicity.Southern France will have a troubling future.
Freedom of religion is a part of a Democratic Republic. Commentators who think there should be none in France until there is else where are illogical. Prejudice has that effect!!
Quote from Wikipedia:
'The Free French forces were drawn mostly from the French colonial empire, rather than from metropolitan France. French nationals from the tropical African colonies formed a large part of the forces at the beginning, as were nationals from French Algeria. Later, many combatants were drawn from the native populations of French colonies. Sixty-five percent were conscripts from French West Africa, primarily Senegal. Other contingents were natives of Morocco, Algeria, and Tahiti (the Tahitians served with particular distinction in the western Sahara). The Free French forces also included units of the Foreign Legion.'
So France is proud of it's Christian tradition? paid for with the blood of it's colonies.
This is really good news even though it's about 30 years late! Now let's see if this mosque gets built. Personally I don't care much for any of the monotheistic religions but I can't stand the French form of racism that says 'liberte, egalite, fraternite' and is then intolerant of the reality of the people living in the country. I found the outcry about halal food being served in schools particularly nasty. Anyone can eat and enjoy halal food. Some would argue it's healthier. But to say, as some candidates in the recent elections were saying, that halal food is not French, is like saying that cous-cous and merguez should be banned. So good luck to the Marseilles mosque and may peace be with us! Insallah!
It is wrong that around the workld these soft political leaders allow a countries culture and heritage be stripped away by people who decide they want to live there, but belong to a different culture or belief. It is wrong for other countries to adapt and to bow down to another countires religion and culture. It is a sad world when French people have to put up with another country invading them with religion and expecting the French to just accept it. Perhaps it's time some of the government decision makers sent their own kids to live in these religious countries and see how they like being treated like scum/slaves and having their rights stripped away from them especially if they are a female. It is ok to be multi-cultural, but when it causes division between the countries inhabitants and those who just move there, then the French citizens should be the deciders of what religious group can and can't do within their country. It works for Muslims in their country, they don't allow churches to be built.
I'm french and i'm so sad. What is happening in france convince me to leave the country, but i have to work my english first !!
Unlike or in contrast to other comments submitted on this issue, I find the decision is an based on principles of an advanced civilized society. This decision is about France and its muslim citzentry and NOT about the middle eastern countries' behaviour. Bigots should NOT exploit this decision for their own shameful and coward beliefs.
this is what "les droits de l'homme" does... theres no limit...
in saudi... a church? dream dream dream
ever heard of deportation? france should try it sometimes
Is France.24 a shill for la PS?
I think this is a wonderful recognition of the cultural tapestry that France is! France has never been a single, homogenous entity, and this is one confirmation of that. I am pleased that this project is moving forward; the right to worship freely should be granted to all people in all nations of the world, without exception! Bravissimo!
Until churches can be build in Saudi Arabia, there is no way mosques should be allowed anywhere near Europe.
Just one more reason why one should avoid Marseille. The France I knew hardly exists anymore. Time to leave. Politically correct bigotry has replaced national identity. Maybe if I go to Saudi Arabia, they will build a mega church for me?
