Sectarian violence breaks out between Buddhist and Muslim groups in Burma
More violence has flared up between the Rakhine and Rohingya ethnic groups in Burma. The Rakhines are Buddhists, like most Burmese people, while the Rohingyas are Muslim - and largely considered to be outcasts. The community was declared stateless in 1982 and have been seen ever since as illegal immigrants in Burma, where locals refer to them as being Bangladeshi. Both ethnic groups live in one of Burma's poorest areas but the issue is so sensitive that few Burmese are willing to address it.
