The RFI – FRANCE 24 Discoveries Award 2012 goes to Elemotho (Namibia) - 03/10/2012
On Tuesday, 2 October in Paris, the RFI-FRANCE 24 Discoveries Award 2012 jury, chaired by Benin performer Angélique Kidjo named singer Elemotho (Namibia) as winner of the contest.
On Tuesday, 2 October in Paris, the RFI-FRANCE 24 Discoveries Award 2012 jury, chaired by Benin performer Angélique Kidjo named singer Elemotho (Namibia) as winner of the contest. Trio Teriba (Benin) and Takeifa (Senegal) were awarded 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
Elemotho G.R Mosimane is a Namibian musician whose roots lie in the Kalahari desert. Author of a first album entitled The system is a joke, the writer-composer willingly accepts the label of "musical activist". He blends the sounds and rhythms of his native land with folk influences from the English-speaking world, with lyrics in Setswana, English and other Namibian languages. Thanks to collaboration with the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre, he was able to record a second album, Human, released in 2009.
Elemotho was chosen from among the ten finalists shortlisted in 2012: Anonyma (Senegal), Lameck Ditto (Tanzania), GT The Guitarman (Nigeria), Denis Larose (Mauritius), Nasser (Mauritania), Maryse Ngula (Democratic Republic of Congo), Spyrow (Ivory Coast), Takeifa (Senegal) and Trio Teriba (Benin).
This year, the RFI – FRANCE 24 Discoveries Award competition attracted entries from more than 500 musicians in Africa and the Indian Ocean islands..
Elemotho has won a cash award of €10,000 and a promotional package including a concert in Paris with the support of the OIF (Organisation International de la Francophonie) and Sacem and an African tour supported by the Institut Français.
About the RFI – FRANCE 24 Discoveries Award
Organized since 1981, the RFI Discoveries Award has contributed to the launch of many performers who have gone on to attract an international audience, among them Tiken Jah Fakoly, Amadou & Mariam and Rokia Traoré. Its jury of industry professionals is chaired every year by a well-known personality (Jacob Desvarieux, Passi, Youssou N’Dour…). Renamed the RFI-FRANCE 24 Discoveries Award this year, it is organized in partnership with Sacem, the Institut Français and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
