During the French presidential election in May, incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy was targeted by a sophisticated cyber attack from the US, which monitored the computers of his closest staff members, a French magazine reported this week.

It is so easy to spy on other people today. This video on BBC is a great example.
Although it is not mentioned who or what agency might be involved in this cyber attack on Sarkozy's campaign, U.S. citizens are the most surveilled people on earth so it would come as no surprise to us if the NSA or some other spook organization were doing this.
True. The article does not say who or what agency initiated this cyber attack. At the same time, U.S. citizens are the most surveilled people in the world so it would surprise few of us that NSA or some other spook department took it upon themselves to snoop on Sarkozy's campaign.
This article sounds like false information. It says "the US", but does that mean "from servers located in the US" or "from the US government". France is an ally of the US and there is no reason to engage in this type of activity. I don't believe the story. It could have been Chinese hackers, or anyone else, pretending to make the software originate from the US so the US gets blamed.
