Herbalism: medical marijuana minus the high

This week we explore the power of plants as a source of healing. We begin in Israel, where researchers have been cultivating customised cannabis.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a compound responsible for marijuana's characteristic high, but horticultural revolutionaries have developed a new strain of the plant. It cuts out the THC while retaining high levels of cannabidiol (CBD), the active ingredient shown to have medicinal effects such as relieving anxiety and nausea and even inhibiting cancer cell growth.

Next we head to Singapore, where French scientists are trying to marry the best aspects of medicine from the east and west. Their latest product is a food supplement known as NurAID II, which is made up of nine different herb extracts designed to help patients recover after a stroke.

Plants can heal but they can also harm. We end the show with a look at the risks of using herbal products without medical supervision.
