It's a highway that symbolises southern Italy's failures. The "Mafia Motorway" has been in construction for more than 10 years and has been a constant headache for the Italian government, with allegations of corruption and racketeering. The powerful Calabrian mafia, Ndrangheta, has siphoned off hundreds of millions of euros, leaving the authorities faced with trying to clean up the mess.
