THE OBSERVERS

A show produced with photos, videos and personal accounts from our Observers around the world - all checked by our staff here in Paris. Saturday at 10.15 am Paris time.

Electricity cuts panic African football fans and an Iraqi citizen films security failures

A news show produced exclusively from content provided by amateurs. Photos, videos and personal accounts from our network of Observers around the world - all checked by our staff in Paris. First run Saturdays at 8:10 am Paris time.

Story 1: Iraq

We begin today in Iraq. Even before Islamist fighters swept across much of the country this month, the capital Baghdad was experiencing a surge in terrorist attacks reminiscent of the worst days of sectarian violence in 2006 and 2007. Security is always tight in the city, and it's been ramped up since the latest fighting began. But how effective is it? Well, not very. Take a look at this hidden camera video posted online by an anonymous concerned citizen. Our Observer Ali puts it in context.

Story 2: West Africa

Now the World Cup. Football fans the world over are glued to their screens this month... not least in Africa. There are five African teams in the competition, and interest is huge. Four of those teams are from West Africa, where fans have a special problem - power outages.
