    French €26bn stimulus plan to boost investment
    "Our response to the crisis is investment," said French President Nicolas Sarkozy as he unveiled a €26bn stimulus package. The plan, which will add a further €15.5bn to the country's public deficit, focuses on the construction and car industries.

    France's unemployment rate in France rose 0.1% in the third quarter to reach 7.3%, according to the national statistics body INSEE. The under 25-year-olds are particularly hit, with 18.7% seeking work in a worsening job market.

    French-Polish film director Roman Polanski has asked a US court to drop a statutory rape charge against him dating from 1977. Polanski was arrested after the parents of a 13-year-old girl filed a complaint and remains a fugitive from the USA.
