Britain's Brown meets US Congress leaders
By AFP
Visiting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown met briefly Tuesday with top Democrats in the US Senate and House of Representatives, after holding his first summit with President George W. Bush.
After meeting separately with the leaders of the Democrat-led Congress, Brown, 56, told reporters US-British relations were "not only strong, but strengthening."
He also recalled his first visit to the US Congress 25 years ago and said: "to be here again is a great privilege."
After meeting Brown, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described US-British relations as "historic and treasured on both sides of the Atlantic."
Brown's first visit to the United States one month after becoming prime minister began late Sunday with a dinner at Bush's presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland.
The two close allies held a formal meeting Monday followed by a joint press conference that stressed their commitment to further strengthen bilateral relations.
Besides Iraq and terrorism, Bush and Brown in their "wide ranging" discussions also addressed education, poverty and health in developing nations, global warming and global trade.
They also agreed to "step up" pressure to end the violence in Sudan's Darfur province which Brown recently called "one of the great humanitarian disasters of our generation."
Brown was scheduled to leave Washington late Monday for New York for a meeting Tuesday with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
