Sochaux wreck French Cup hopes of amateur team

PARIS, April 17, 2007 (Reuters) - Sochaux needed extra-time to defeat fourth division amateurs Montceau-les-Mines 2-0 in the French Cup semi-finals on Tuesday.

Montceau, who previously knocked out Ligue 1 sides Racing Lens and Girondins Bordeaux, failed to emulate Calais, the last amateurs to reach the final in 2000.

“We had a good run. We were dreaming of the final. We did well tonight, it was a close game but it’s over,” playmaker Mathieu Gaudin told French television.

Sochaux, fourth in Ligue 1, opened the scoring with a close-range shot by Sebastien Grax five minutes into extra-time and Jerome Leroy sealed victory 18 minutes later.

“Montceau confirmed they were a very solid team but for us the main thing was to reach the final,” said midfielder Karim Ziani.

Olympique Marseille, winners of the trophy a record 10 times, and Ligue 1 bottom club Nantes meet in the other semi at the Stade Velodrome on Wednesday.
