Venezuela's anti-drugs chief announced Friday that top Colombian alleged drug trafficker Wilber Varela, sought by the United States, has been killed.
"It has been conclusively proven that this is drug trafficker Wilber Varela," said Lorge Luis Castillo, who told reporters that 32 characteristics matching the body to the suspect had been verified.
Varela, who went by the nickname Jabon (Soap), was on the US Drug Enforcement Administration's list of most wanted fugitives. The US government had offered a five-million-dollar reward for his arrest.
His bullet-riddled body was found Wednesday along with that of another man in a tourist cabin in Loma de Los Angeles, Merida, Venezuelan authorities said.
