Friday, February 1, 2008

NICE, Feb. 1 - French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced during a speech at Sophia Antipolis University, near Nice, France, a 5-year plan to combat Alzheimer's.  He has proposed 1.6 bn Euros in funding, of which 300 are to be dispensed in 2008.

In Sarkozy's words, "France wants to help the fight against Alzheimer's within 10-15 years, as the disease is among those whose evolution can be staved off. In a few years, patients' suffering will be nothing like that of today, and perhaps we can eradicate Alzheimer's altogether."

The plan is slated to take effect on Jan. 1 of next year.
