During his visit to the US, French president Nicolas Sarkozy will give the Légion d'Honneur, France's highest military honour to 6 WWII veterans. Among them is a senator from Hawaï, Dan Inouye, our correspondent in the US met him.

The office of Dan Inouye is full of souvenirs. There is memorabilia from his days on the Indian affairs committee and a sacred volcanic rock from Hawaii, the state he has represented in the Senate for over 40 years.

But this may be the most precious souvenir of all: the flag of the all Japanese-American regiment to which he belonged.

Inouye enlisted at age 18 and fought in France as well as in Italy, where he lost an arm. After more than a year and a half in the hospital, he was able to return Hawaii where he later he chose to go into politics.

Italy has already honored the Senator, and now, it's France's turn. A country that gave him some of his best war-time memories.

Dan Inouye voted against the invasion of Iraq in 2003. And he says France's refusal to join the operation should not be seen as an act of betrayal.

At age 83, Dan Inouye is among the very few remaining US Senators who fought in World War II.
