Manchester United hold on to title

Manchester United clinched the Premier League crown over rivals Chelsea after beating Wigan Athletic 2-0 on the last day of the season. At the bottom of the table, Fulham stay in the top flight while Birmingham bid farewell to the Premiership.

Manchester United retained the Premier League title on Sunday when they won 2-0 at Wigan Athletic with a first-half Cristiano Ronaldo penalty and a goal by substitute Ryan Giggs.

United ended the season on 87 points, two clear of Chelsea, who drew 1-1 at home with Bolton Wanderers after an injury-time Kevin Davies goal for the visitors cancelled out a scrappy effort by halftime substitute Andriy Shevchenko.

It was United's 10th Premier League title and 17th championship in all and they will now go for a double when they face Chelsea in the Champions League final on May 21.

Everton qualified for the UEFA Cup after their 3-1 home victory over Newcastle United secured fifth place.

Birmingham City and Reading joined Derby County in being relegated after Fulham won 1-0 at Portsmouth to complete an unlikely escape.
