One of the world's finest ski-jumpers, Finland's Janne Ahonen, 30, record five-time winner of the Four Hills tournament, announced on Wednesday he would retire at the end of the season.

Finland's top ski-jumper Janne Ahonen announced on Wednesday he is to retire from competition because he no longer had the motivation it takes to compete at the top level.

The 30-year-old from the winter sports capital of Lahti also said that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Widely regarded as one of the finest ski-jumpers of the last decade, Ahonen won the prestigious Four Hills Trophy a record five times from 1999 to 2008 and was victorious in 36 World Cup jumps.

He failed to win Olympic gold however with only two silver medals at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City and Turin four years later to show for his efforts.
