Valentino Rossi takes Italian Grand Prix pole

Former seven-time world champion Valentino Rossi set a new lap record Saturday as he stormed to the pole position for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Mugello with a time of one minute 48.13 seconds. This is the 50th pole of his career.

MotoGP championship leader Valentino Rossi's bid to win his seventh consecutive Italian Grand Prix was boosted when he took pole position for Mugello Sunday's race.

 

 

Italian Rossi, winner of the preceding races in France and China, set a fastest time of one minute 48.13 seconds in Saturday qualifying to claim his first pole of the season.

 

 

Spain's Dani Pedrosa, who is three points behind Rossi in the standings in second place, came in 0.167 of a second behind on his Honda to take second on the grid.

 

 

Italy's Loris Capirossi completes the front row after clocking a time of 1:48.313 on a Suzuki.

 

 

Australian world champion Casey Stoner of Australia, who is 41 points behind Rossi in fourth place in the overall standings with 56 points, heads the second row thanks to a time of 1:48.375 on his Ducati.

 

 

American duo Colin Edwards and Nicky Hayden, on a Yamaha and Honda respectively, join him on the second row.

 

 

Rossi's team mate Jorge Lorenzo, who shares second place in the standings with his Spanish compatriot Pedrosa, is back in seventh place on the grid.

 

 

In the 125cc class, Italy's Raffaele de Rosa took his first pole position on a KTM ahead of reigning champion Gabor Talmacsi of Hungary and Frenchman and championship leader Mike di Meglio.
