Youssef Chahine, one of Egyptian cinema's leading directors, was in a coma in hospital Sunday following a brain haemorrhage, the Mena news agency reported.

Youssef Chahine, one of Egyptian cinema's leading directors, was in a coma in hospital Sunday following a brain haemorrhage, the Mena news agency reported.

The 82-year-old "is in a coma following a cerebral haemorrhage," Mohammed Abdel Daher of Cairo's Ach-Chourouq hospital told the news agency, adding that Chahine is in a "serious" condition.

Born in Alexandria on January 25, 1926, Chahine discovered and launched the career of Omar Sharif and was given Cannes film festival's 50th anniversary lifetime achievement award in 1997.
