Alitalia keeps name and plans to take off again

The Italian Air Company, which took over Alitalia to rescue the Italian carrier, has announced that the company will not change its name. The new Alitalia, which merged with competitor Air One, will take off again starting on January 13.

AFP - Italy's flag carrier Alitalia will retain its name following a takeover by a consortium of Italian industry figures, which will now also be called Alitalia, a senior executive said Tuesday.

The Italian Air Company (CAI) consortium "will now simply be called Alitalia," Salvatore Mancuso, the vice president of the consortium, was quoted by Ansa news agency as saying after a meeting of the group.

The investor group formally took over the ailing airline earlier this month in a long-awaited deal worth 1.05 billion euros (1.49 billion dollars). It is to retain 12,500 Alitalia workers while cutting some 3,250 jobs.

The new Alitalia is set to begin operations on January 13.
