AFP - Four people were killed Wednesday in the French Alps in an avalanche that swept away a high-school party and their ski guide, gendarmes said.
A total of six students and their guide were caught in the avalanche near the town of Valmeinier, according to gendarmes, who did not reveal the victims' identities. Two of the party were also injured.
The group were skiing off piste in foggy weather when the avalanche struck shortly after midday, gendarmes said, adding that an eighth group member had sounded the alert.
A helicopter rescue team managed to locate the party and dig out the victims and survivors.
