David Casteu and Nani Roma win stage 1

In the motorbike category, France's David Casteu (pictured) won stage 1 of the Dakar rally between Colon and Cordoba. In the car category, Nani Roma (BMW) took a slight 2min and 7sec advantage on another Spaniard, Carlos Sainz (Volkswagen).

In the motorbike category, France’s David Casteu (Sherco) won the first stage of the South American desert rally, between Colon and Cordoba. He has a 3-second slight advantage on his counterpart and 2007 edition winner Cyril Despres (KTM). Last year's winner, Spain’s Marc Coma (KTM) arrived third.

In the car category, Nani Roma, who joined BMW team, finished the stage in 2h 11min and15sec, giving him a 2min and 7sec advantage on hot favourite Carlos Sainz (Volkswagen). Last edition winner South African Giniel de Villiers (Volkswagen) came in fourth.

However, the race's first day was overshadowed by a tragic accident in which five spectators were injured when two contestants lost control of their vehicle. One woman was taken to the hospital in a "critical" condition and died from her injuries.
