Strikes: keeping count

The ongoing strikes and mass protests in France against government plans to raise the retirement age have sparked a so-called "war of numbers". Unions accuse the police of deliberately giving much lower estimates for protester turnouts in order to belittle the movement. Officials say unions are inflating the figures to try to exaggerate the level of public support for their action. Some private groups have come up with much more accurate counts, using cutting-edge computer technology.
