Irish bishops meet Pope to discuss fallout of child sex abuse scandal

The editorial in this morning’s The Irish Times says the Pope must accept the resignation of Irish bishops implicated in sex abuse scandals as well as acknowledging “that there was institutional, systemic cover-up and protection of abusive priests that involved the church as an organization and senior members of the hierarchy.”

The Commission to enquire into Child Abuse’ or the ‘Ryan report’ came out in May 2009 and concerned child sexual abuse related to the Catholic Church in Ireland. A similar report focusing on abuse in the Archdiocese of Dublin came out at the end of last year and both were damning in their criticism of the Church hierarchy for covering abuse and protecting priests involved.

The Irish Times leads with today’s meeting of Irish bishops in Rome to discuss the fallout of those two reports with the Vatican hierarchy. The paper says that senior bishops are aware of the “calls to repent” and that this “will not be a cosmetic exercise.”

The editorial says that the Pope’s planned pastoral letter to the Irish church “cannot limit itself to more declarations of regret”. As well as accepting the resignation of bishops concerned by the two reports and acknowledging the institutional cover-up of abuse, the Vatican must “open its archives to show its own role in responding to sex abuse cases in Ireland instead of hiding behind the cloak of “sovereign immunity’.”
