France, the US and UK led a first military strike against Libya on Saturday, firing more than 100 missiles from the sea after a crisis summit in Paris. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has threatened to turn the Mediterranean into a battleground.
AP - The U.S. fired more than 100 cruise missiles from the sea while French fighter jets targeted Muammar Gaddafi’s forces from the air on Saturday, launching the broadest international military effort since the Iraq war in support of an uprising that had seemed on the verge of defeat.

Gortney said the mission has two goals: prevent further attacks by Libyan forces on rebels and other civilians, and degrade the Libyan military’s ability to contest a no-fly zone.
