Japan and North Korea talking again
Issued on: Modified:
After four years of diplomatic silence, Japan and North Korea began talks in Beijing earlier this August. The kidnapping of 17 Japanese nationals in the 1970s and '80s and Japan’s objection to Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal lie at the heart of tensions. The latest discussions appear to be bearing fruit; Tokyo has been ensured the kidnappings will be addressed in the next round of talks.
