Massoud Hossaini: Afghanistan from the inside

Massoud Hossaini is an Afghan photographer who won this year’s Pulitzer Prize for his photograph of a "girl in green".

Hossaini doesn’t particularly like the picture that won him the prize. In it, a young girl called Taraneh dressed in green stands among a pile of dead bodies - her friends and family. Hossaini happened to be at the scene.

The 31-year-old had started photographing his native country five years earlier in a bid to understand and bare witness to the violence in Afghanistan.

He recognizes his award-winning photograph as powerful but painful. He has kept in contact with Taraneh whom he says has stayed at the scene ever since and still suffers from nightmares. Hossaini admits that the line between objective observer and fellow citizen is a difficult one to draw.
