Andy Murray beat Gaël Monfils, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 1-6, 6-0, in an extraordinary quarter-final on Wednesday night to end French participation in the singles events at this year's French Open.
Murray dominated the first two sets but Monfils refused to capitulate. After Monfils broke serve at the end of the third set, Murray collapsed in the fourth. The momentum appeared to be with the Frenchman, but then the match changed direction in a mystifying fashion.
Murray regained control. With sunset near and facing the possibility of having to resume the match on Thursday, Murray galloped through the final set in 24 minutes to beat not just Monfils but the gathering gloom.
