France’s Gallopin wins 11th stage of Tour de France

Eric Feferberg, AFP| France's Tony Gallopin crosses the finish line of the 11th stage.

Tony Gallopin of France on Wednesday won the 11th stage of the Tour de France, two days after wearing the yellow jersey on Bastille Day.

The 26-year-old escaped from a depleted peloton on a fast descent in the last 10 kilometres of the 187.5 kilometre run from Besançon to Oyonnax.

Although he was caught by a trio of chasers, he attacked them in the final 3 kilometres and held on for victory ahead of John Degenkolb and Matteo Trentin.

Italian Vincenzo Nibali finished safely in the chasing pack and held onto the leader's yellow jersey.
