Sarkozy, the Return: Calls for unity after victory in leadership contest
Issued on: Modified:
France's former president has one of his old jobs back. Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy has won the vote to lead the UMP party, setting him on the road to 2017's presidential election. But first he has to unite a party bitterly torn apart after his 2012 defeat. Sarkozy's hard-right message plays well with the rank-and-file, 55% of whom favor alliances with the National Front. Meanwhile former prime minister Alain Juppé is enjoying a revival - and is taking on Sarkozy for the presidency.
