New economic reform bill: A gamble for President Hollande

This week, the "law on growth and activity," an omnibus reform bill aimed at boosting the moribund French economy, is presented to the cabinet. It includes several explosive proposals, such as easing restrictions on Sunday store openings and deregulating certain professions. This is anathema for a number of Socialists and the battle in parliament is expected to be bloody.

Meanwhile, the pressure on France from its European partners to bring its budget deficit into line with EU rules is increasing, first and foremost with a direct warning from none other than German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
