China's might on parade: Old foes wary of show of strength (part 2)

In a tremendous show of strength, China marked the 70th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II with a mammoth military parade. With President Xi Jinping announcing 300,000 fewer soldiers, is Beijing feeling the pinch of a slowing economy, or simply modernising its military? At a time when Beijing is also building artificial islands to claim territory and sending ships to patrol off Alaska, do its leaders have the means and the will to challenge the US as the planet's policeman?
