In pictures: World welcomes 2015

3 min

With spectacular fireworks, sound-and-light shows, music, dancing, as well as a few traditional rituals in some parts, the New Year was heralded across the globe as revelers bid goodbye to 2014 and cheered in 2015.

Revelers converged at landmark sites, beaches, public squares and parks to bid adieu to a rather turbulent 2014 and ring in a New Year filled with hope. While the crowds thronged the regular sites – such as Australia’s Sydney Harbour and New York’s Times Square – in other parts, celebrations were more muted as Baghdadis in the violence-ridden Iraqi capital enjoyed a rare lifting of the overnight curfew and Monrovians in Ebola-hit Liberia took advantage of the curfew break to attend New Year’s Eve services.
