"Timbuktu", "Saint Laurent", "La Famille Bélier", "Hippocrate", "Eastern Boys", "Love at First Sight" and "Clouds of Sils Maria" are among the nominations for best film at France’s 40th annual César awards, organisers said Wednesday.
Juliette Binoche and Catherine Deneuve were both nominated for best actress for their work in "Clouds of Sils Maria" while Marion Cotillard earned a nod for "Two Days, One Night" as did Karin Viard for "The Bélier Family". Emilie Dequenne was nominated for "Not My Type", Adèle Haenel for "Love at First Fight" and Sandrine Kiberlain for "She Loves It".
Guillaume Canet ("Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart"), Gaspard Ulliel and Pierre Niney (for "Saint Laurent"), François Damiens ("The Bélier Family"), Romain Duris ("The New Girlfriend"), Vincent Lacoste ("Hippocrates") and Niels Arestrup ("Diplomacy") will compete for the honour of taking home the César for best actor.
US actress Kristen Stewart was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in "Clouds of Sils Maria".
Sean Penn is to get an honourary César in recognition of his role as one of cinema's "living legend", the organisers said in a statement on Tuesday. As "a stand-alone icon in American cinema", he will receive the award during the academy's annual prize ceremony in the French capital on February 20, two days before the Oscars are awarded in the United States.
The 54-year-old is a "mythical actor, a politically active personality and an exceptional director", the French Academy of Cinema said.
Penn, who won Oscars for his performances in "Milk" and "Mystic River", has earned a strong leftwing reputation for his public potshots at then president George W. Bush, his support of gay marriage and for starting a foundation to help Haiti after its devastating 2010 earthquake.
He was married to Madonna in the 1980s, then to "House of Cards" star Robin Wright from 1996 to 2010. Since last year he has been seeing actress Charlize Theron and is reportedly taking steps to adopt her 3-year-old son.
