Saint-Pierre: Traces of a volcanic past
Issued on: Modified:
The first French town established on the island of Martinique, Saint-Pierre was founded in 1732. What was the historical and cultural capital of the island, a jewel of the Caribbean, changed forever on May 8th, 1902, when the Mount Pelée volcano erupted. The town was destroyed and over 30,000 people killed. This human and architectural disaster has left its mark in the ruins of the old town, but also in the form of underwater shipwrecks.
