The number of unemployed people in France remained stable in June, the labour ministry said on Monday, offering a respite after the jobless rate hit yet another record-high the month before.

The ministry said that France last month had 3.6 million benefit claimants in the top category (those with no job and looking for full-time work), or 1,300 jobseekers more than in May.

However, when other categories were included, (where workers do occasional work and are looking for full-time employment), the total figure fell by 0.3 percent to 5.4 million.

In a statement, the ministry of labour said the drop should be treated with caution, however, noting that France has recently changed its methodology in the way it collects and interprets this data.
