On June 26th 2014, weeks after the Iraqi city of Mosul fell to the jihadists,the US announced a 500m$$$ programme to train and equip 15,000 Syrian rebels within 3 years to fight the Islamic State group....At the time, it was seen as a better alternative than sending US troops on the grounds.Now, barely 18 months later,that programme, in its current form, is struggling to survive...SOT CARTER"I wasn't satisfied with the early efforts in that regard and so we're looking at different ways to achieve basically the same kind of strategic objective.In a statement, the Pentagon said the revamped programme would focus on training and equipping vetted rebel leaders instead of entire ground units...with the goal of increasing their combat power over time...DLSThe New York Times reported this Friday that REBELS WOULD NO LONGER BE RECRUITED ..."training programs in Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates...a much smaller training center would be set up in Turkey"The programme has come under fire FOR its poor turnout and disastrous results...in July, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said only 60 rebels had been trained...that same month, the first cohort of US trained rebels went to mission in Syria...within 24 hours, most of them were either killed or captured, alongside their weapons...
