2005 riots, ten years on

This week, France in Focus is dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the wave of unrest that shook the nation in 2005. We first take a look back at the event that sparked 21 days of violence across France's poorest suburbs. We then go into the wider issues that lead to the rioting: geographical isolation, a lack of political consideration and record-high levels of unemployment.

Finally, as a new generation works to shake off the stigma of the so-called "banlieues", we end with one of many projects that aim to change France's perception of its impoverished suburbs.
