Doping: Can Kenya avoid an Olympic ban?

The World Anti-Doping Agency meets on Thursday to decide whether to allow Kenya to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The verdict is keenly awaited in the country, where President Uhuru Kenyatta signed a tough new anti-doping law on April 20. However, our reporters in Nairobi have obtained footage and eyewitness accounts which suggest that cleaning up the sport will be a monumental task. FRANCE 24’s Julia Steers and Duncan Woodside bring us this exclusive report.


Right of reply: FRANCE 24 spoke to Athletics Kenya, who said that it would be inappropriate to comment on allegations that officials have taken bribes while an investigation is underway by the newly formed Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya. Nonetheless, Athletics Kenya stated that its procedures for dealing with athletes accused of doping are transparent, including the recording of minutes in the presence of lawyers.
