More than three years after French-led forces ousted jihadists who had taken over the northern half of Mali, residents of the city are relieved to be able to celebrate in peace.

But a lingering sense of insecurity remains following a spate of terror attacks across the Muslim world this week that left 350 people dead in Dhaka, Baghdad and the Saudi holy city of Medina.

Malian troops and UN forces in Timbuktu are on constant high alert amid sporadic attacks on soldiers and civilians, and Mali remains the deadliest country in the world for UN forces.
