At least 159 people were killed in central Italy after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck before dawn on Wednesday. Startling images have emerged in the wake of the disaster as village residents and rescuers searched the rubble for survivors.

Scores of buildings collapsed in the towns of Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto, with Amatrice mayor Sergio Pirozzi declaring "half the village has disappeared".

Emergency services worked frantically to find people trapped beneath the ruins after the quake struck as people slept.
