Terrorism, strike actions and migrant crisis: Is the EU becoming less attractive to tourists?

The summer of 2016 proved to be a particularly difficult season for tourism in France – hit hard by recent terror attacks, natural disasters (such as the flooding in Paris) as well as the migrant crisis. France is generally one of the most visited countries in the EU: Last year, more than 84 million visitors came to France, but the recent events have done all but inflate that figure. During the first half of the year, visits had dropped by as much as 15 percent compared with a year earlier.

The drop represents almost €750 million in lost revenues for the Paris region alone. Other countries, however, have seen an upswing in tourism numbers. Bulgaria and Croatia, for example, have never attracted so many visitors. So what can governments do to boost their economy and bring back the tourists?
