Greece’s minister of tourism: ‘Tourism is a government priority’

Elena Kountoura, Greece’s minister of tourism, talks about how her country is working to revive the economy by attracting holidaymakers. So far, the strategy has been successful, she says, adding “tourism is now a priority for the government, with a 6 percent increase in one year”. On the issue of the thousands of refugees who have landed on the Greek shores in the past year, however, she insists “it is not a Greek issue, but a European issue” and that human rights must be respected.

Kountoura also says it is “our duty is first to help these people, open our doors, and respect their dignity.”
