Polish civil society leader slams 'illiberal regime' in Warsaw

Since the Law and Justice party came to power in Poland last year, EU officials have accused the government of trying to control the constitutional court, the civil service and state media, while the Council of Europe says that Warsaw’s moves threaten democracy and the rule of law.

The leader of Poland’s Committee for the Defence of Democracy, Mateusz Kijowski, sharply criticises the ruling Law and Justice party, saying that Poland is going in the direction of an "illiberal regime".

"They are dismantling democratic institutions; they are closing debate; they are trying to show that the winner takes all, and that there is no space for any minorities. This is the dictatorship of the majority", he told FRANCE 24's Armen Georgian.
