Video: Air strikes on Mosul help breach Islamic State group’s defences
Iraqi elite brigades fought their way into the outskirts of Mosul on Tuesday, backed by coalition air strikes. FRANCE 24’s reporters followed Iraq’s special forces as they coordinated the advance with their international allies.
Targeted air strikes by the US-led coalition have been crucial to the troops’ swift offensive, helping Iraqi troops set foot in the country’s second-largest city for the first time in more than two years.
On Tuesday, elite forces captured Mosul’s state television despite resistance from Islamic State (IS) group fighters that is only likely to stiffen when fighting reaches the inner city.
As the battle for Mosul shifts to gruelling house-to-house combat, the task for the coalition air forces can only become more difficult.
