Motherhood behind bars: Palestinian filmmaker Mai Masri on '3000 nights'
Date created :
When Layal finds herself in an Israeli prison, the young Palestinian schoolteacher has no idea that she’s soon to give birth to a baby boy. Released in France this week, "3000 nights" follows her struggle to bring up a child amid the hostility and revolt of the early 1980s. Director Mai Masri was inspired by true events for her latest film, and she tells us about how filming in a prison brought a metaphorical weight to the process.
We also take a look at a theatre company that - despite many obstacles - has strived to develop artistic and cultural activities in the Palestinian Territories for three decades. The Palestinian National theatre is based in East Jerusalem but the company has come to the Parisian suburb of Ivry for a run of shows. France 24 went to meet the cast.
