Germany: Merkel challenged by populists?

Former European Parliament chief Martin Schulz, now appointed as the Social Democrats' candidate, is challenging Angela Merkel in general elections set for September. Merkel, who is running for a fourth term as chancellor, is often described as the stalwart of a liberal and united Europe. So how will these two pro-EU candidates fare in a country where the far-right, anti-EU AfD party is growing in strength?
