The Interview

Songlines through opera: The tales of Australia's indigenous communities

Annette Young meets Australian Aboriginal opera singer, Deborah Cheetham, who is a member of the "Stolen Generation." For nearly 100 years up until the 1970s, thousands of children of Aboriginal descent were forcibly removed by government agencies and church missions from their families and placed in white homes. Cheetham, who has written an opera about her family’s experiences, talks of a shift in Australia towards acknowledging the struggles of its indigenous communities.
