Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado tells FRANCE 24 that the next few days will be decisive in the crisis engulfing her country. She says the opposition is calling for a general strike and mass protests to prevent the regime of President Nicolas Maduro from holding the election of a constituent assembly this coming Sunday.
Maria Corina Machado claims the regime in Caracas is a "criminal dictatorship" eager to remain in power against the will of the vast majority of Venezuelans and says she fears more violence in the days ahead. She urges the international community to slap more sanctions on top regime officials, arguing that this has helped divide the Maduro camp.
She holds out hope that a growing number of officials, especially in the military, wil soon part ways with Maduro and allow a peaceful transition to a new system.
