EU enlargement commissioner says bloc's soft power works

The European Commissioner in charge of Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Johannes Hahn, says visa-free travel for Ukrainians is a good example of EU soft power working. "Ukrainian citizens were eager to get visa-free travel to the EU," Johannes Hahn states. "We introduced 144 criteria that had to be fulfilled." Once Ukraine had made progress on rule of law and corruption, visa-free travel was approved this May.

Commissioner Hahn also answers criticisms that the European Neighbourhood Policy has been too broad, too clunky and too slow in bringing about democratic change since it was launched in 2003.
