Catalonia independence vote: Tensions rise between Barcelona and Madrid

This year, there’s been a new push for independence in Catalonia where the regional government has called a referendum. Madrid has once again – and in the strongest terms possible – declared that any such vote would be illegal, however. So where does Catalonia go from here? And how much backing is there for independence among the region’s 7. 5-million strong population?
